Importance Of Instructional Rounds In Education

By Patricia Wright

Instructional rounds are very valuable tools to use in education for a school or even the district. This program allows educators get access to view a veteran in the teaching profession or a tutor who has an excellent reputation in the classroom. This is done to enhance skills and develop a collaboration culture between members in this profession. The goal of instructional rounds in education is not to provide some feedback to a teacher in observation or to evaluate them. It is to compare the instructional practices of observing educators to the one being observed.

The instructional rounds program allows educators to quickly develop their skills by looking at what other exemplary individuals in same field do. It helps new and inexperienced teachers to later reflect on what was observed and be able to come up with a solid plan to improve. It is always better to learn by observing what others do rather than relying on theory and notes.

A designated lead teacher leads the program. This person must be highly respected. In some cases, the administrator assumes the role of leading these rounds. In this program, no evaluation of educators takes place because the main idea behind it is that other teaches can get to learn and share tactics that work for them.

This program does not allow for any teacher evaluation whatsoever. This is because the individuals under observation are volunteers. This allows the program to run without intimidation and coercion from anybody. A free environment allows learning to take place. This is what ensures the success of the project.

It is important to maintain an aura of efficiency by having small groups to attain ultimate results. On the chosen day, proper communication should have occurred including the students. On arrival, the team is expected to knock and wait to be welcomed. They will observe the class quietly taking notes where necessary. When the class is done, the team will give a brief thanks and leave.

After the lesson, the team will convene in a specified location to reflect and discuss their experiences. Each teacher will comment on what they have observed and add any other relevant information. The team leader should remind all members that the aim of session is not to evaluate a teacher but to learn something new. This session is discrete and no information learnt, observed or discussed should be repeated outside the circle. In addition, no member of a particular group should offer suggestions to the volunteer teacher unless they ask for such feedback.

The team should present findings and notes from the classroom session by stating the positive things and negative things noted individually. They should then proceed to speculate why or what brought about the items noted. Its important to start with positives before discussing the negatives identified. This helps the members to know the reason behind everything they have noticed. It is not mandatory to share anything in this group analysis.

At the end of the rounds, each individual teacher is expected to implement what they have learnt and observed. Its a great way for teachers to pick up new tactics and strategies to implement and incorporate them into their teaching. The main aim is to improve education standards to benefit students.
