How Instructional Rounds Are Initiated

By Frances Long

Teachers can develop pedagogical skills through various ways. One of them is known as instructional rounds. This method is meant to develop the ability of educators working together. It also instills leadership skills that are important when they instruct students in class. Educators can observe and learn from the teaching approaches used by their colleagues. This method is carried out in several ways.

It is recommended that all educators must participate in this process at least once in every semester. This procedure is also supposed to be facilitated by a lead teacher. This individual should portray exceptional leadership skills. In most cases, school administrators usually initiate this process.

Teachers are advised to volunteer all the time whenever this exercise is rolled out. Those who volunteer are likely to learn more from their colleagues. Alternatively, school heads also have the capacity to choose the participants of this exercise. They should, however, choose indiscriminately. This is because when this exercise is rolled out, all teachers should benefit from it. Furthermore, educators are key determinants of the academic success of students in a particular school.

This endeavor commences with educators forming a group of at least five individuals. Lead teachers are not counted as a member of a group because they are the facilitators of the whole procedure. Educators should inform their students that multiple educators will be present in their classroom to observe how teaching takes place. The gathering of several educators in a classroom consisting of students as teaching takes place helps other teachers to learn from each other.

Educators who have been given the assignment to observe their colleague should enter a classroom quietly. This ensures that learners are not disrupted. Also, these individuals need to occupy the backseats in a classroom. They should make notes as their colleague teaches the learners. This procedure should not exceed ten minutes because most students are uncomfortable when several teachers are in their classroom. Once this procedure is over, these educators need to exit the class.

Team members usually convene to discuss their observations and experience while they were in class. Every member is given a chance to comment and this procedure is initiated by a lead teacher. Team members are also taken through debriefing by a lead teacher. During the debriefing, they are required not to discuss their observations with individuals who do not belong to their team.

Observing teachers are capable of identifying the teaching strategies and practices adopted by an observed teacher during the end of this process. This enables them to adopt those practices when teaching students in their schools. They can also reexamine themselves based on their experience with other teachers.

This endeavor stimulates energy and excitement among teachers who work in the same school. It is also an opportunity for educators to learn from their colleagues from other schools. When educators get the chance to interact and observe how their colleagues teach, they are revitalized and empowered as professionals.
