Following surgery to have her thyroid removed, Rebecca’s weight increased dramatically and she began struggling with her mental health. She was desperate to lose weight, but nothing was working. After seeing the success a work colleague was having on the plan, she decided to give it a go. And she absolutely smashed it, losing 3 stone and winning £3000 cash in our Transformation Challenge.
Here is her story…
New You: Rebecca, why did you decide to join the challenge?
Rebecca: I think it was motivation to get me to my goal. I just thought I may as well give it a go. I wish I’d taken more photos before, though. I think when you start the diet, you’re so self-conscious and so struggle to take photos of yourself. But as you lose weight and your confidence increases, you take more photos. Even looking at other people who have won the competitions, you can just see in their face how much happier they are on the end one. On the first photos I took, I looked miserable. Whereas on the last one, I’m smiling.
I was shocked when I received a call to say I was the overall winner. I was having a really hungry day and in the middle of eating my soup but as soon as I got the call, it was like my hunger just disappeared. I looked over to one of my colleagues and told her I’d won. I was just so shocked. I didn’t know what to say, to be honest. I’m still shocked now.
New You: We’d love to know how you heard about the plan!
Rebecca: My friend in work was getting married. She went to her dress fitting, and the woman who was doing the fitting was a New You customer. She mentioned the diet, and my friend signed up herself. I think she was on plan maybe a month before I started because I had seen her results and how easy she was finding it. I’d lost a stone before I started New You and because I’d seen how good my friend was doing I thought I’d give it a go. I didn’t think I’d last a week, but six months down the line, I managed to lose three stone.
Getting started…
New You: What led to you starting the plan?
Rebecca: I felt quite drained, to be honest, not only because of my mental health, but because I felt sluggish and bloated because of the weight I was carrying. I’ve also got a slipped disk in my back, so I think the weight was adding pressure to it, so I was in pain. But my mental health was shocking. So when, say, for instance, me and my family were planning to go out somewhere for the day or to an event, a wedding maybe, I was so self-conscious and I was thinking, I shouldn’t be feeling like this. This is ridiculous. I’ve never struggled with my mental health. I’d have days where I’d just be really moody, which I’ve never been like. And it is horrendous. So I knew I had to do something about it to try and change myself and just how I felt.
New You: And tell us about that first week…
Rebecca: Overall, I’d say it was easier than I thought, but I’m not going to lie, the first three days were really hard, really tough. The headache hit, the hunger hit, and I was starving. I was wanting food I wouldn’t ever touch before. I was like, I’d love just a slice of cucumber, but I didn’t, and I managed to persevere. And I think the trick was going on Secret Slimmers because that helped me massively. People were always telling me to get more water into me. And it did. I managed to consume over four litres of water a day. Easy now. And that is the biggest hack with this diet – you’ve got to consume water and coffee in between. And that’s what’s kept me going.
New You: What are your go-to meals & snacks?
Rebecca: I think my first one was Dahl, but it got to a point where my whole house stunk of it because I ordered so many of them as I was obsessed with them. I then tried Carbonara, and I became a little bit obsessed with that at one point too. But I think overall it would be Tacos because as soon as I had them and started adding in chillies, spices etc, that became my main go-to. So I’d have two of them every night with the chicken crisps.
For the first three weeks, I didn’t have any snacks, but then I just wanted that little bit extra. After trying my friend’s snacks, I ordered my own and I couldn’t believe I’d waited so long to try them. I had to stop ordering the wafers because I had no self control over them. They are just so nice. My auntie and friend are also on the plan because they seen my progress. I told them to order them too and warned them about how good they are. I just banned myself from the wafers because I couldn’t stop myself.
Life changing…
New You: How would you say the plan has changed your life?
Rebecca: When I had my daughter in 2014, I went anorexic, because of the condition I had – Graves disease. I went down to seven stone and a half. And I couldn’t put weight on, so I would have to consume like 3,000 or more calories a day just to maintain my weight. So I did that for about five years before they actually decided then to do an operation to take my thyroid out. Now, I got so used to eating those extra calories, so when I had my thyroid out, it had the reverse effect. I couldn’t lose weight. I was putting the weight on, and then actually, I went to my heaviest, which was 14st 6lbs.. So I was like, I’ve got to try and lose weight. So I started going to the gym, tried to diet and just be a bit more mindful about my choices of food.
So I managed to lose about stone. But everyone was saying to me then, from their experience with the condition I’ve got, that I wouldn’t lose anymore weight. I had hit that point where I couldn’t, and I was trying my hardest with everything.
I feel like you become too engrossed in counting different things on the back of food. And you’re constantly having to think about the values in each bit of food you’re having. Whereas The New You Plan was just so much easier. You have your four packs a day and that’s it. And then you can have your snack allowance if you wanted that. So it was nice not having to worry about looking and counting different calories or sugar, fats, whatever. I find it really easy. I wish I’d just done that from the beginning.
Since losing 3 stone, I’m feeling much better. I was having to rely on painkillers for my back, which I didn’t like taking because they just made me feel a bit groggy. I don’t get pain in my back half as much, so I don’t even need to take the pain killers that I was prescribed. I don’t get acid reflux anymore, whereas I’d get that daily, to the point where it would make me sick. And then my mental health, I think that’s got to be the biggest one because, like I said, I’d never suffered with mental health before, but now I feel just so much happier. I feel I can do more with my family, whereas before I felt like I couldn’t be bothered as I was too tired. I didn’t want to go out and get dressed for the day. But now I look forward to it. I’m probably the one who’s arranging it, to be fair.
New You: What is the nicest compliment you have received since losing weight?
Rebecca: I’ve had quite a few compliments in work as everyone’s noticed where I’ve lost weight. And from my family and friends too. But I think when my mum was saying I was back to my happy old self, that was the nicest compliment I had because she’d noticed the improvement in my mental health as well. It wasn’t necessarily just the weight.
New You: What would you say to someone thinking of starting the plan?
Rebecca: Lean on the support group because I find, everyone’s journey is different. My auntie struggled because she was a slower loser. But I told her to go onto Secret Slimmers, because she won’t be the only one, that there would be so many people on there who are in the same position. I told her to just persevere and then it will start to come off, which she did. I’d sent her a few posts of different people where they had experienced the same thing. She felt so much better seeing that she wasn’t the only one.
There’s a lot of people who are in this group, all doing the same plan, and it’s nice being able to have that extra support there. I know when I struggled – I did have a few occasions where I’d gone off plan, and it’d only be a day or two, but you feel so bad afterwards. So I’d go on the group and tell everyone what had happened. And the amount of support you get back is amazing.
Glynis does that team pride in that group. She mashes it every day.
