Chelcie joined The New You Plan not just for her health but also with an eye on the £1000 prize. This mix of a cash incentive and personal goals fuelled her impressive journey, resulting in a 4st* weight loss. Winning the challenge didn’t just slim her down; it boosted her confidence and completely energised her life.
In this interview, Chelcie shares her motivating experience with The New You Plan, detailing the ups and downs of her weight loss journey, the personal satisfaction from her achievements, and how the challenge has reshaped her lifestyle and self-image. From the initial spark of wanting to win to the unexpected joys of newfound confidence, Chelcie’s story is a testament to the power of dedication and the personal rewards that come from embracing change.
New You: Chelcie, why did you decide to join the Transformation Challenge?
Chelcie: Well, I think obviously the prize money is a big motivator. But it was nice even just to push yourself along. People can be on this for a couple of months. And at the end of it, you’re like, oh, in two months, I wonder how well I’ll do in that challenge. I think, the money obviously is a good motivator, but it’s nice as well to just be the winner, too.
I was absolutely buzzing, honestly, because it’s been a really good week anyway, because I just started my new job. So I was on high from that. And then I had a missed call from Northern Ireland. I was like, what’s this? And then I got your voicemail and I was like, oh, no, what’s happened? It didn’t even cross my mind that it could have been that. I thought there was something else. When you said I’d won, it didn’t even click. And I was just sat here and my kid was sitting behind me and she could hear you and then she ran in and told my husband before I could! She shouted: “Mummy’s the winner, mummy’s the winner.”
Getting started…
New You: What led to you starting the plan?
Chelcie: I have done very low calorie diets before. I knew that it would work, but obviously the hardest part I find is going to be the maintaining. I have a pretty low, underactive thyroid. I’m on quite a high dose of medicine for that. And nothing else worked for me at all. I did no carb, but it was just maintaining my weight rather than losing anything. And then I’ve seen the advertisement again for The New You Plan and I was like, I’m just going to give it go. And it’s beyond comparison to the other one I ever did. The one I was previously on was rubbish compared to this. I found this one so easy to stick to because the meals are so good. And I love how you can have 4 meals on this one. I’ve absolutely loved being on plan.
New You: And tell us about that first week…
Chelcie: So my very first week, I think it was easier than I thought because my husband started it with me. He lasted a week, by the way. But he started with me and I wanted to beat him, but also encourage him at the same time. So that helped motivate me to stay on it. So I found it easier than I thought, but partly that was just me being competitive with him and then also wanting to encourage him. But again, he lasted the week as he missed his food too much. I think he lost a stone in his first week so he did well. He’s kept most of it off, but he’s at the point now, seeing how much weight I’ve lost, he’s realises it could have been him too.
New You: What are your go-to meals & snacks?
Chelcie: So my favourite thing is putting the kids to bed and either making my Rice Pudding, Salted Caramel Cake or Chocolate Brownie. So every 3 days I’m going through the rotation and I’m happy. Usually every night I’m sat there with my sweet treat and that’s my favourite part of the day. But with all the meals, I love them. And I like the Shakes for when I’m on the go or making an ice cream. But I love having a Red Berry or a Vanilla Custard Porridge in the morning. I rotate these every day. Then I have a Soup for lunch. I find, because you’ve got proper meal choices, it’s so easy. I’ve done re-feed 3 or 4 times. Apart from day 3, which is my nightmare day, but I’ve always made it through. And I don’t find it hard to get back onto the plan because it doesn’t feel like I’m deprived of anything that way.
Life changing…
How would you say the plan has changed your life?
Chelcie: I’m just 100% back to me before kids. So I had kids, put on a lot of weight, and then I lost my dad, and that obviously didn’t help. And then after my youngest was born, I was diagnosed with the underactive thyroid and put on even more weight. So my biggest weight ever, I was up to 21 and a half stone. So it was like I was lost, and now I feel like me again. I feel so much more energised. I honestly, just feel like I can take on the world. I feel like I’m a better parent. I feel like I’m a happier person. And I had the confidence to go get a new job. We moved from Northern Ireland to England in December. I’d been on the plan 4 weeks whenever I went for this job interview. I went in and got the job and I just felt so good about myself again. The New You Plan has given me my confidence back and made me feel like me again.
New You: What has being on plan taught you so far?
Chelcie: It’s taught me that I don’t need a massive plate full of food to eat. I can eat little and often and still be full all day. If I have a double pack, that’s me done for the night. I’m not getting off the sofa. I’m so stuffed. It’s definitely taught me to watch my portion control. I’ve done refeed and Switch, a few times, which is great, because it shows how flexible the plan is. But even during those refeeds, I’ve always lost or stayed the same because I’m well aware of my portion control. There’s no reason for me to pile my plate high. And I would have it reasonably healthy anyway. It would be home cooking. We would have probably got a takeaway once a month anyway. So it was purely portion control for me, I think. And sauces – that would be my mayonnaise. I made a whole big healthy salad and then smothered it with mayonnaise. So I think it’s taught me that I can put flavour in with spice. Rather than adding all the high calorie stuff and the massive portions, I don’t need it.
New You: Any memorable non-scale victories you’d like to share?
Chelcie: I think probably the best thing is letting people take my photo again. When I entered the challenge, it was really hard for me to find photos. I’ve only got candid photos of me because I’ve been a camera dodger. I haven’t taken photos with my kids for years and I’ve only got face photos with them. So that’s the biggest non-scale victory for me! The kids are probably sick of me now because I’m always asking for photos. But that’s a good thing, because I always felt bad for not taking any with them. I also hated seeing myself, but now I don’t.
New You: What are you most looking forward to when you reach your goal?
Chelcie: My goal is to lose another half a stone. That’ll take me to the correct BMI. I’m at the point now where everyone’s already telling me to stop, but I want to just get to that point, just to prove that I could do it. So I’ve only got another half a stone to get to my actual proper goal, but I’m nearly six foot, so I can’t be too skinny.
We were pricing up in Disneyland the other day and we were looking up going for October half term. Simon, my husband, said we can’t afford it right now, but then when I got the phone call to say that I won, we can go now. So we’re going to book that and go to Disneyland. So I’m very much looking forward to that. And I will definitely not have any worries about fitting in any ride, which is amazing.
New You: What is the nicest compliment you have received since losing weight?
Chelcie: So my granddad is 84. I was at my cousin’s wedding back in July and I think I had lost 3 stone at this stage and my grandad just came up to me and said: “There’s my Chelcie back again.” And it was just that blessing. None of them would have said anything horrible to me. But you could just see in his face that he was proud. So that was my favourite one, I think. And then last night I was at Bingo and one of the wee ladies shouted at me: “Would you hurry up and buy some smaller clothes already!”
New You: If you could go back in time to when you were beginning the plan, what piece of advice would you give yourself?
Chelcie: Don’t overthink it. Plan everything. Don’t deprive yourself either. There’s so many people who are refusing to have snacks and they’re refusing to have Bouillon because they don’t want the extra calories. At the end of the day, you’re on low calories anyway. If you can have a snack and it gets you through that extra hour until your dinner pack, just do it. That’s it. Don’t deprive yourself. And that would be my advice for everyone.
