Contrary to popular belief, vitamin D does not increase your risk of skin cancer. In fact, your body needs this vitamin to maintain strong, healthy bones, to fight infection and promote overall health, according to the Vitamin D Council. This vitamin, created organically by the body when exposed to sunlight, is also essential for the proper functioning of the heart, lungs, brain and muscles.

The truth is that the majority of people living in the Western world do not get enough natural sun on their skin for their body to produce the vitamin D that their body requires, noted the Vitamin D Council. There are several reasons for this, most notably the years of media campaigns and dermatologists urging people to avoid tanning and to always wear sunscreen. Additionally, the days of people working on the land and spending long hours outdoors are gone.

The deficiency has been known to cause osteomalacia in adults, which leads to weakness in the muscles and bone pain. A very rare condition that can develop in children is rickets, when the bones become weak and bend. These causes are a direct result of the lack of vitamin D, which aids the body in obtaining calcium from supplements and food sources.
